MARCH is Nutrition Month and Salba Follow Up

My first post was on Salba so I wanted to let you know what I thought. I did find the whole Salba in Lethbridge in a health food store, Naturista.  It looked like a really great store right down town.  I will definitely be going back to take a better look.  I also found ground Salba in Claresholm at Larabies.  Yahoo!  I would definitely recommend people look out for it.  Gram for gram is has 7x the Vitamin  C of an orange, 6x more calcium than milk, and reduction in inflammation (great for Gentry's arthritis).  We've used it in whole form  in a smoothie, on toast or in yogurt.  There is no taste - it just adds some crunch.

For Nutrition Month there is a lot of focus on super foods like Salba and Blueberries.  I'll have a whole post on super foods shortly.  Some of the health stats are pretty staggering.  In 2004, nearly one-quarter of Canadian adults were obese and an additional one-third were overweight.  That’s over 14 million adults carrying excess weight!  The numbers are just as alarming for youth – 26% of Canadian children and teens aged 2 to 17 were overweight or obese.  These numbers come from a Dietitians of Canada news release.  Here are a few things the dietitians suggest we do:

1.       Quality counts – whether at home, school, work or play, keep healthy food choices available!

2.       Give your food portions a makeover – tune in to moderation in serving sizes - smaller plates work well for me!

3.       Colour your world with vegetables and fruit!  At least a fruit and or vegetable at every meal or snack helps.

4.       Be a savvy shopper – get the nutrition facts on foods from the label

None of these are surprises but hopefully good reminders for us that it takes some effort to stay healthy for the long term.
