Going Organic and Information about Honey

I live in a small town and the shopping choices are limited.  But I'm still curious about organics.  The cities have tons of options for dairy, fruit and vegetables, meat.  An article from Chatelaine September '07 (there is that one issue again!) put my mind at ease a bit.  The bottom line - the more frequently you eat a food the more you should consider buying organic.  The top five most pesticide-contaminated produce items are:

  • peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery and nectarines according to Environmental Working Group.

the rest on the top 12 most pesticide-contaminated produce includes:

  • strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce and potatoes.

From RealAge about Honey

Next time you crave a little something sweet, skip the sugar bowl, and spoon on some of this instead: buckwheat honey.   The dark, sweet, sticky stuff will give your body a powerful shot of cell-protective phenols -- something plain old sugar simply can't do.

Color Is Critical
Honey's antioxidants protect your body against the kind of cell-damaging processes that can lead to premature aging and disease. But when it comes to honey's antioxidant content, color makes all the difference. Buckwheat honey, the darkest of all the kinds tested in a recent study, had the highest antioxidant activity by far.
I haven't seen buckwheat honey in the regular grocery stores around here, but honey (despite color) is still going to give you more antioxidants than white sugar.  Honey has more calories than sugar but it is sweeter so you use less.  It is great for coating your throat when you have a cough.  And if anybody knows of other medicinal uses let me know!  It is the only food that will never spoil.  Those bees are so clever!
