A variety of nutrition notes
I've collected a few little thing so I'll give you a couple of these tidbits now and then.
The first - everyone knows I love tea - especially green tea. It's loaded with antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke. But researchers are finding that we don't absorb much of those antioxidants from the tea. But don't despair. There is a fix. Add Vitaminc C rich foods or juices (Purdue University found Vitamin C helped to increase the amount of antioxidants absorbed). Lemon juice had the biggest benefit, then oranges, limes and grapefruit. Not difficult to modify.
Did you know that skim milk has the most calcium of all milks?
Do you know what inulin is? I have noticed it in my yogurt and wasn't sure if it was good or bad. Turns out it's a keeper. Inulin is a type of soluble fibre that acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in your stomach. It doesn't add a lot of calories or bulk to food so manufacturers are adding it to replace some of the sugar (due to it's mildly sweet flavour) and fat in products like yogurt, cookies and granola. This could help you increase the amount of calcium, magnesium and iron your body absorbs, it also may help lower your cholesterol levels. Inulin could also be listed as chicory root. Introduce it slowly as some people have reported mild abdominal discomfort. It is naturally found in asparagus.
4 healthy habits can see you living 14 years longer according to a new British study. So these are basic, we all know them but are we doing them?
1. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day
2. Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
3. Don't smoke
4. Drink alcohol in moderation (less than 2 drinks a day)
This will reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.
